Thanks to all that helped out at our Championship Showdown.  It was a great rodeo!  I hope everyone had a wonderful rodeo season.  A huge thank you to Laurie Stone for a great job as president for the last 2 years.  We are looking for a new vice-president so if you are interested, please come to the November meeting.  I will keep you posted on our winter meeting schedule.  Thanks!

July 28, 2008

Thanks for a great rodeo season!  I appreciate everyone's patience while I learned the secretary job.  Deby has always done such a wonderful job, I had some big shoes to fill!  Anyways, the season went well, the kids did awesome, and we all survived.  Hopefully everyone had a great time at the picnic yesterday.  The auction went really well and we raised almost $6,000!  A big thanks to everyone who donated and bought items and to Kelly and Cindy Duffin for organizing it so well.

Entries for the top ten are due on August 4.  I WILL start rolling down on August 5, so do not be late!  If anyone is interested in putting together a float for the parade, let me know.

There is a benefit for Colton Wright on August 5.  He was injured at the rodeo in Challis and has had to spend some time in the hospital.  The information is on this flyer:  Colton Wright Benefit

Laurie Stone is retiring this year.  She has done an absolutely fabulous job the last 2 years as our president.  If you see her, remember to give her a big thanks.  We will be appointing a new vice-president at our November membership meeting.  The job is a 4 year rotation, with 2 years as VP and 2 years as president.  If you're interested, be sure to come to the meeting.  Watch your email and the website for information.

Thanks everyone!  See you at the fair!

A press release from a New Zealand rodeo association:

The International Rodeo is New Zealands largest rodeo, held annually indoors at Westpac Arena during Cup & Show Week in November. This event takes the sport to a level like never before with the use of sound & lighting effects, pyrotechnics, LPG flamethrowers and explosives which ensures a sold out stadium every year. Tickets are priced from just $65 for adults and $45 for kids. Go to www.ticketek.com to get yours now!

It’s back and it’s bigger than ever

Saddle up ladies and gentlemen because November 15th 2008 will once again see Christchurch’s Westpac Arena filled with Cowboys, Cowgirls, Bulls, Horses and clowns.

Held as the finale to Canterbury’s Cup & Show Week the 2008 International Rodeo is shaping up to be bigger than ever before with cowboys from the USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia battling the Kiwis for rodeo domination.

The 2007 International Rodeo sold out in just a few months and International Rodeo promoters say that the demand is greater than the amount of seats available. The 2007 event gained global interest with the TV production reaching over 300 million viewers world wide so this year the rodeo will be streamed live via the internet to over 9 different countries and millions of rodeo viewers.

The 2008 International Rodeo will feature four rodeo disciplines: bull ride, saddle bronc, bareback bronc, and an exciting cowgirl barrel racing challenge. The International Rodeo will also feature entertainment acts from New Zealand and Australia as well as the rodeo cheerleaders, international bull fighting champion, rodeo clowns and over 300kgs of LPG propelled pyrotechnics.

Country and Western performer Brendan Dugan will perform live from a stage suspended from the roof of the Westpac Arena making the 2008 International Rodeo an attraction for the entire family and every age group.

Corporate hosting is another major part of the International Rodeo as companies can purchase tables seating 10 sitting ringside with full bar and food services catered by the Wrangler cowgirls.

Spectators will be on the edge of their seats when 39 of the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls gather in Christchurch during Cup & Show week for the biggest stand-off between man and beast ever staged in New Zealand.

Tickets are on sale at Ticketek from June 1st and spectators are urged to hurry as they aren’t expected to last long. Adults from $65 Children from $45.  www.rodeogp.co.nz

Hit Television Show, “Wife Swap” Seeking Rodeo Families!

ABC’s hit television show, “Wife Swap,” is searching for families who are active in Rodeo to be considered for upcoming episodes of the show. We are searching for parents and their children who love the sport and would be excited to represent Rodeo on a national level. We’d like to find a family who eats, breathes and sleeps Rodeo...and who would be excited about sharing their fun and unique lifestyle with another deserving family!

To be considered for the show, families must consist of two parents (not necessarily married) and have at least one child between the ages of 5-18 living full time in the home. Families chosen for the show will receive a $20,000 honorarium.  Interested parties can contact the Meghan McGinley at (646) 747 7936 or Meghan.McGinley@castingrdf.com.

We made it through our first rodeo (fairly) smoothly.  Even with a few event changes, we made pretty good time.  A huge thanks to our sponsors and everyone who volunteered to help out yesterday!  We couldn't have done it without you.  And, as always, our kids did great!  I'll have the daysheet for Preston ready 1-2 days before.  See you there!

Well, it is that time of year again - how quickly it goes.  We hope that the winter season sees you well and that summer returns very soon.

During the off season, I am not on the computer nearly as often.  I try to check the e-mail at least weekly; however, I do not check it quite as regularly.  So if you need anything quick, please give me a call and I will get back to you soon.

Don't forget the annual membership meeting.  It will be held in November.  I will get the date and time out to you just as soon as it is decided.

Thank you so much for all the great memories.  Your friendship has truly been appreciated and I look forward to seeing all of you down the road.

July 21, 2007

To all IJRA members:

I really do try to be patient – because I understand that the benefit is for the kids – but I have a huge favor to ask of everyone.

We enter just shy of 600 kids at each rodeo.  In Rigby we had 620.  If 90% get your entries in on time that still leaves 60 kids that I have to follow up with and get entered after the fact.  I realize that mistakes get made, but please take into consideration the burden that you put on the association when you do not get entered.  I am not pointing fingers or trying to make anyone feel bad – truly!, it is just that you will have a new secretary next year and she will have enough to tie up her mind.  It is a great deal of work to keep up with when everything is in line.  When you do your work and then have to redo it sometimes a couple of times, mistakes are guaranteed

I have really enjoyed being your secretary and I am glad that I could help out once in a while.  Please don’t apologize – just keep this in mind next year.

THANK YOU!!

July 20, 2007

Not that many of you got to vote on it – but I really appreciate being able to leave the rodeo early to go with my family.  It turned out to be a great weekend.  Please join me in thanking Emily Clemens to filling in at the office so that all of you could get your awards.  She did an excellent job with entering all the data – when I got to it, it only took a moment to format what she had done and get it posted to the web.  I should have entries done by tomorrow and have the daysheet posted this weekend.

Well, we are really down to the wire now.  Please, please, please – if you see anything that you do not think is right, please let me know as soon as possible so that I might get it corrected prior to the final rodeo.  Everything has been audited – but stranger things have been known to happen.

At American Falls, we will be doing a great deal of checking and double checking – so if you need something from the office, and we do not answer right away, please hang in there, we will get right on it.  Emily is going to come help me – it would be truly great to not be up all night doing the books for the awards picnic.

On Sunday, lunch is served from 12-1.  We will begin the auction as soon as everyone is served and the awards will be presented as soon as we have all of your money (did I say that out loud?), I meant as soon as the auction is complete.  Don’t forget to bring chairs and/or blankets to sit on.  Plan to hang around afterwards and just relax and visit.

I will have entry forms for the EISF Championship Showdown.  I know it sounds harsh, but if you finish in the top ten and do not sign up-I won’t come looking for you.  You will have until August 5th to decide if you are going to come, get an entry form, and get it turned in.  Then we start moving down the list until all ten slots are filled.  Remember, in the team roping, we take ten in each age group (both headers and heelers), plus their partners.

Well, I am going to get back to work now.  Thanks for everything.  See you in 9 days.

July 2, 2007

You proved it once again - the IJRA has the best families around.  You were amazing in Pocatello.  Having two arenas available has not happened while I have been here and I was a little worried that we wouldn’t be able to keep it moving – but for anyone who was not able to stay to the end, we were done by about 6:30 p.m. and we still ran 593 kids through.  Totally amazing – and all while so many of our directors were out for the JR High Nationals.

If you get some time, here is the link to keep track of our kids who are in New Mexico.  http://nhsrawranglerdivision.com/2007WJHFR/2007index.shtml  The action started this morning and some of our kids have already got their first event under their belts.

The next rodeo will be July 14th in Rigby.  Couple of items to remember.  They do not have a run back alley for the cattle, so they use a truck and trailer to bring cattle from one end to the other.  Please do not park up against the arena fence, they will need that kept clear for the trailer.  Also, they use their concessions to earn money to help the HS kids going to nationals, so feel free to eat lots.

The awards picnic is just around the corner.  Awards have been ordered and the points sheets have been audited through the first three events.  Points and standings are posted on the web page.  We award the top 33% in each event – which gives a lot of kids a chance to walk away with something.  Buckles and gifts to the top four and gift certificates on down.

We have a slight change in the location of the picnic.  It is still located at Ross park, but the shelter located right next to the pool is taken and we will be at a different section of the park.  This shelter has toys available for the little kids, so hopefully that will work nicely.  We will still be close enough that the kids can walk to the zoo or the pool after dinner and awards.  We invite anyone who wishes to hang around afterwards and chill with us.  It is great to just get together and visit for a change.  Anyway, we will have the park marked so that it will not be too difficult to find.  I will get down there next week and see what kind of shade we have, but it might be a good idea to throw your canopies in just in case.  Dinner is pot-luck.  IJRA provides the meat and the drinks.  We will also provide a few plates and forks, but if you think about it, please bring your own plates and utensils.  The rest of the meal is up to you.  We break up the menu based on your last name.  Last names E-I / Rolls and Condiments; J-U / Salad or Covered Dish; and V-D / Dessert.  If you plan on feeding 30 we usually make out pretty good.  Don’t forget serving spoons for your dish.

The awards picnic is also our big fundraiser of the year.  We have an auction.  We rely on your donated items to make the auction a success – that and your wallets.  Please invite your sponsors, your grandparents, your neighbors, your employers.  Donated items – the sky is the limit.  In the past we have had services, tack, crafts, equipment, feed, home décor, you name it, nothing is unreasonable.  Especially things that will get the kids bidding – they love that stuff and the cost goes up really fast J.  Payment is due the day of the auction unless arrangements are made – contact Laurie Stone.  Auction items can be brought to Kelly and Cindy Duffin at the rodeo or brought the day of the picnic.

We have a lot of new families this year, so I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that the rodeo in American Falls is open to all, it is not limited to a few who qualify.  The “qualify only” rodeo is held in September.  The top ten in each event are eligible to compete in that event.  Entries for this rodeo are available at the picnic and are due by August 5.  This is a pretty fun rodeo as it is held during the Eastern Idaho State Fair (and the kids get to miss a day of school).

Well, I have probably rambled on long enough.  Each week I try to think of things that you may not know – so if you think of something, please ask your questions.  There is probably others who have those same questions too.

Thanks again, and enjoy your independence – God Bless our freedom and those who are fighting to keep it.

June 24, 2007

Outstanding work as always at the Grace Rodeo - the Grace fair committee does an outstanding job.  We cut over an hour off of the rodeo.  So sorry about the delayed results - I was not expecting a storm to come through and shut down the office.  Results are now up-to-date and posted for your review.

Some great news.  We have been at the Pocatello arena all week with the HS state rodeo where they run two arenas.  They are going to leave the little arena up for us to use also.  This is great news! So I just wanted to give everyone the heads up.  I will prepare the day sheet so that some events will run in the big arena and some in the small, keep an eye on what is going on so that you do not miss your events.  Events will not run simultaneously but it will save us some time because when an event is going on in one arena, set-up can be done in the other arena – which of course means that we are going to need a lot of help.  Please, please, please – be prepared to jump in and run gates.  We will try to cut two more hours off of our day – wouldn’t that be something?!?

I haven’t had a moment to work on the daysheet yet, but Sunday is coming, so I hope to have it out to you by Monday.  Have fun and try to enjoy your summer.

June 10, 2007

Well, one down – and we survived.  J  A Huge thank you to the Preston Crew – they did a completely awesome job.  The first one of the season always seem to go a bit longer just because everyone is still trying to get there bearings.

We have a lot of new families this year.  I hope everything went well for all of them.  Now that we have all had a look at the goals, we just want to touch on a couple of things.  Entries really need to be in by the appropriate due date.  As you can see, we have a few kids to organize.  When I have to redo the daysheet several times – well I hope you can see how things can get messed up (besides, it is a lot of work).  Also, we had many of you return the volunteer survey, yet we had several events where we had to call for assistance.  I know it is not always easy to know what needs to be done or where to help out at, but if you volunteered for a specific event, we would really appreciate your assistance.  If you did not return your form, please do not let that stop you from jumping in.  Grab a friend and go open a gate or pull ropes, anything would be great.  Directors, I believe that Jason sent you a list of who had volunteered, please utilize them and try to have your crews lined up.

Don’t forget your judges.  We all get very busy and often we don’t remember that they have been in the arena for 5 hours and have not had a break.  If you are going to the concession stand, maybe you could grab them a bottle of water or a hamburger.  I am sure they would appreciate it.  They work very long hours and get paid very little money, so please try not to dog them too much about the calls they make.  Remember, they are doing a very difficult job, one that most of us would not want to have.  600 judgments a day is more than most of us get even close to.

I hope to have the daysheet posted by tomorrow.  Sometimes we have things happen (incorrect entries or mixups) that cause the order to be slightly changed.  The judges sheets are the official order, so when it is your event, please be ready and listen for your name.  While we try very hard to have everything accurate, sometimes stuff just happens, so if you could be ready and flexible, I would really appreciate you.

The order of events will be different in Grace so that everyone is not always the last event.

Then, there is the garbage.  It takes a whole crew a great deal of time to pick up your trash at the end of the evening.  I do not feel that it is too much to ask of you, to pick up after yourselves – please.

We want to wish our HS State Qualifiers the best of luck at the state competition next week.  We hope everyone will get a moment to go cheer them on.  Bannock County Fairgrounds, Pocatello – June 19-23 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

I know that is a lot of words, so I just want to finish with a big thank you!  We really do appreciate you.  We have an awesome thing going here, we produce really great contestants, and it really is because of all of you.  Have a great week and we will see you bright and early on Saturday.

*****Correction to entry date - American Falls entries are due on July 14th - not June******

Hope to have the daysheets posted by May 30 - wish me luck

The ROYALTY CONTEST is April 21, in Idaho Falls at the Ellis Supreme Arabian Arena and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.  We hope that you are planning to attend.  Shanna Swan and Shasta Dixon have been very busy at work making this a premier event.  There are tons of great prizes ready for distribution.

Idaho Junior Rodeo Association

Laurie Stone, President

Dear Laurie,

I am writing to you to serve official notice that this will be my final year as the secretary of the Idaho Junior Rodeo Association.

During the past seven seasons, I have thoroughly enjoyed my position as secretary.  I have worked hard to improve the association, while providing accurate and complete records for the association.  At this time, other obligations restrict the amount of time and effort that I can dedicate to the IJRA.

I would be honored to finish the 2007 season as your secretary and assistant, but will not run again or accept any future nominations.  I look forward to showing your next secretary how the computer program works and what needs to be processed throughout the year.

Thank you for the tremendous support that the Junior Rodeo membership and officers have shown me in the past and I look forward to another successful year.

Sincerely,

Deby Barrington

Missing Horse  - if you have knowledge of a horse lost in the Bridger National Forest, please contact the owner listed on the above flyer.

July 15, 2006

Holy cow!  Where did all the time go.  The last rodeo is just around the corner.  The year-to-date results are posted on the web site.  Please review them carefully.  The books will begin audit tomorrow, but anything you find first will make the process that must faster.  I know, I can hardly believe that I might mess up too, but it happens. J

The officers would like to again thank everyone who has pitched in to help this year.  We couldn’t do it without you, no help is too small.

Sunday is the awards picnic.  It will be at Ross Park near the swimming pool.  Dinner will begin serving at 1:00.  The association provides drinks and the meat (Logan Butler is cooking tri-tip), we ask that you provide the stuff to go with it.  Please bring your own plates and utensils plus a dish based on your last name.

Y-D / ROLLS

E-P / SALAD OR COVERED DISH

Q-X / DESSERT

During dinner we will have our fundraiser auction.  Any items you can get donated will be up for bid.  In the past we have had some really great and varied items.  After the auction we will distribute awards.  Remember, we award 33%, so if you finish in the top one-third, come collect your rewards.  Bring your swim suits, as after all is said and done, it is a lot of fun for the kids to go spend some energy while the adults sit in the shade and gather up all the energy we lost during the season.  It is a great time to visit and get to know everyone.

Top Ten entries will be available at American Falls and at the picnic.  They are due the first part of August, check the form for the exact date, but please do not be late.  If the first 10 do not enter, we move down to the next qualifiers.  After the spots get filled, we cannot go back and add someone who changed their mind or forgot the due dates.  This event is an invitational rodeo for the top ten point competitors at season year-end.  However, points are not carried into this rodeo.  All is a fresh start.  Jackets are awarded for the top three plus high point winners in all six divisions.  This year will have no admission fee for the rodeo, but still requires a gate fee at the fair.  It is held Thursday during the Eastern Idaho State Fair.

The general membership meeting has been scheduled for November 18th in Pocatello.  More information will follow, but please mark your calendars so you can help guide next years rodeos.

As soon as I get the word on camping and stalls, I will get it out to you.

See you on Saturday.

June 30, 2006

IMPORTANT!  Due to a conflict with the arena, the American Falls rodeo 2006 has been moved to Blackfoot.  Same date, same time, different arena.

The awards picnic remains unchanged.

June 27, 2006

IJRA members were outstanding at the Wrangler Division Idaho State Finals Rodeo.  Congratulations and Good Luck!  Go on and remind the Nation what Idaho is made of.  For complete results, click here.

June 19, 2006

Two down – three to go.  Great job to all who helped make Grace a success.  As usual the Grace committee outdid themselves.

Sorry for the inconvenience of having no concessions.  The burger wagon had a blow-up on the highway and did not make it in.  By the time we got word that they were having trouble, there really weren’t any viable options for a replacement.

Entries for the Rigby rodeo are due on Saturday, June 24.  Many entered at the rodeo, which is great, but if you did not get entered yet, please get them in.  Malad entries will be due on the 1st and American Falls entries are due on the 8th.

Clarification on a couple of rule items that came up recently.

  • Barrel and Pole racers are not allowed to circle coming into the arena.  This is a rule that was adopted by the high school association two years ago and has been followed by the IJRA, as in the end we want to make great HS and National contestants.  If the entry gate is not centered you are allowed to enter and line up before beginning your run.  The high school rules result in a disqualification for violations.  Our board has elected to go with a 5 second penalty instead.
  • Sheep Riding, up until a few years ago, the association used rams for the sheep riding event.  They were bigger and stronger and weight was not such a grave issue.  Due to rams having large horns, the association decided to move to hornless sheep, i.e. ewes.  They are smaller and require that we maintain the 50 pound weight limit a little better.  Contestants were weighed prior to the event and were allowed to compete even though they were over-weight with the understanding that they would be required to make weight before Rigby in order to continue.  Because kids will continue to grow, we have decided that mandatory weigh in will have to become the normal.  Many were bordering 50 pounds.  At weigh in, they will have to be below, or they will not be able to compete.  If you were over-weight at Grace, but are now under 50 pounds, you will be allowed to ride.
  • Parents cannot assist contestants inside of the arena.  I know this seems a little harsh when the contestants are so small.  It truly is a time issue.  We are there to compete and there are 607 kids.  If your youngster isn’t ready to compete, please don’t make them.  Also, as a safety issue, if you are helping your children at the gate or behind the scenes, please wear appropriate shoes.

I know that if you are new to the association, you may not know where to help out, even though you may be more than willing.  It is not bread into us to know that someone has to stand in that spot or open this gate.  We realize this and thank those that have found a place in the helper line.  If you are still a little dazed about all that is needed, please stop into the trailer and we will take your name and as a duty comes up, we will give you a jingle.  Especially as the days start heating up, it will take more of us to make it through.

Thank you so much for all that you do and for letting your children compete in the IJRA.  If you get a chance to spend any time at the HS or Jr High competitions, you will get a first hand look at how Jr rodeo can help these kids to become really great competitors.  So many of your state and national champions began it this very arena.  We wish them all the very best of luck in their upcoming competitions.

IJRA Members:

Well, the first of the entries are in and we will have 522 runs the first week in Preston.  Don’t forget to send in your Grace entries if you have not yet done so, they are due June 3.

I have submitted a list of the events to the stock contractor.  As soon as he has a chance to work out how much stock will be needed, I will put together the day sheet and post it to the web page.  Feel free to print from there and take to the rodeo with you.  Hopefully Tuesday.

This looks to be another great season for the IJRA.  Remember, it takes all of us to make the day go smoothly.  Please jump in and help with arena gates, catch pens, stripping chutes, pushing cattle.  Also, members are not allowed in the arena when they are not competing.  Please exit immediately after completion so that the next contestant can begin.  Parents are never allowed in the arena, unless directly assisting with a contestant or an event.  Please stand outside of the arena to take pictures and video – and to cheer.  Parents who assist their child beyond the plane of the arena risk having their child disqualified.  Stay off the back of the chutes unless competing.  Know where your young ones are.  Pick up your garbage.  Be ready when called.  Dress appropriately, Behave.  All the things that professional cowboys and cowgirls do.

It gets really warm during the day, make sure you have plenty of liquids for the kids.

Thanks for all you do.  Please ask if you have questions.
